TED Talk – Amy Web: “How I hacked online dating”
After years of being single and unsure about how to find the man for her, Webb decided to try online dating. Webb tried this out for a few months, and after several failed dates, she decided to switch things up. She listed all of the things she found most important in a man and organized them into tiers based on importance; this allowed her to easily sort through the men who messaged her based on whether or not they met her requirements, which all had point values attached.
Soon, she found a man who exceeded the minimum number of points needed for Webb to go on a date with him. Within a few years they were married with a baby girl.
TED/Amy WebbData analyst and writer Amy Webb left her first few online dates problem with online dating – and meet the dates she actually wanted at a restaurant then left her with the bill, Webb describes in a TED talk.
Fortunately, Amy Webb has discovered a way to personalize the online dating process that can help all of us. She put her expertise to work on reverse engineering the algorithm that her dating website was based on. Amy realized that the data collected for online dating profiles had two fatal flaws. First, people have trouble being completely honest when filling out questionnaires, and secondly, the type of data that is asked for is typically superficial.
The combination of these problems results in people being paired in matchups that have no substance. Amy took it upon herself to create her own rating system. She listed the characteristics that were important to her in a man, and she rated each potential date based on her personal values. In other words, she would not go on a date unless a man reached a certain ranking in her unique system.
This might sound superficial in its own right, but it is actually quite thoughtful when you think of the uncomfortable dates that were likely avoided.
